Lonesome George

Lonesome George

No trip to the Galapagos Islands would be complete without our #10 pick the Charles Darwin Research Station.  The heart of soul of Galapagos Conservation, the Charles Darwin Research Station is home to both the Galapagos National Park and the Charles Darwin Foundation together these two organizations work hand in hand to preserve and protect the Galapagos.

Located in town of Puerto Ayora on the island of Santa Cruz, the Darwin Station provides a wonderful introduction to the Galapagos National Park it’s history, the wildlife that lives there and the threats to maintaining this magical place for years to come.

For many the highlight of visiting the Darwin Station is to view the tortoise breeding and rearing program.  Here visitors can see  up close Galapagos Tortoises from small hatchlings to large individuals like Lonesome George, the most famous of the Galapagos Tortoises thought to be the last of his species.
