National Park Suspends Operation of Galapagos Adventure (Galaven I)

The Galapagos National Park has suspended the the operations of the Galapagos Cruise yacht Galapagos Adventure for 90 days. Accoring to park documents the boat making unauthoized changes to to its itinerary between February 13 – 15. The Galapagos Adventure which operates under the commercial name of the Galaven I and GAP5 is a tourist class boat which operates weekly cruises with 20 passengers.
According to the Director of the National Park, the operations manager of Galapagos Adventure, requested a change to the itinerary but the request was denied by the national park. The park based their decision because the site Punta Suarez, Gardner Bay and North Seymour were overloaded with tourists. The national park said it is not the first time that this vessel incurs such irregularities and weighed the 14 various regulations violations prior to making their decision.
The Galapagos Adventure is operated locally by the company Repregal which is owned by the family of Assemblyman Alfredo Ortiz Cobos Galapagos (municipal). Ortiz said it is “absurd and unusual punishment that would never have been imposed on any company … Only for the ‘crime’ of helping another boat out of trouble for emergencies were presented and which would have led to international demands. ” The Assemblyman further said: “The action of the Galapagos National Park director is just a vendetta and a higher order of power that seeks to silence my voice.”
